There was movement down at Durty’s, for the word had got around
That the Joker draw was on each Thursday night
Most found their way quite early, from the happy to the surly
So they could drink and even have a bite
Try a Guinness and a sandwich with tomato, ham and cheese
And don’t forget the onions, and me ticket if you please
Or you could have Dad’s Shepherd’s Pie, the best I’ve ever had
I’ve quenched my thirst, my belly’s full, I’m feeling kind of glad
To be here at Durty’s, where the craic is at its best
Where so many of my Country men are standing breast-to-breast
Or out there on the footpath, where you grab a smoke or two
And become mates with strangers, the likes you never knew
We’ll talk about the Joker, and where the card will be
If my ticket’s drawn to pick the card, what a stroke of luck for me
Throughout the weeks they’ve dwindled, only three left on the Board
The money tells me Five Grand plus, oh how I praise the Lord
I felt my luck was kind of slim, I prayed a little harder
I even thought, a trip back home and of me Mum and Farder
The closer that the time came near, my heart began to pound
I even felt so light of foot, I’m floating off the ground
Cause the ticket’s drawn at 9.00pm, the winner has to pluck
One card of three, how good is that, or am I out of luck
The raffle tickets folded, my luck was looking slim
2,000 tickets in the box, my number was therein
And when Dan called out Green No. 4, I shouted out “that’s me”
My turn to pick the Joker, for everyone to see
They started screaming, some said left, whilst others shouted right
Excitement set my heart a glow, will I win tonight?
I pointed to the middle, as the sweat ran down my face
Dan turned the card, to my dismay, I picked a bleeding Ace
The atmosphere went silent, you could hear the moans and groans
Then, the Joker’s still up on the Board, through everybody’s phones
So, I’ll be back if not to win, to share in someone’s pick
One out of two, much better odds for any man or chick
But best of all I know I’m safe, when my thoughts do roam
That being drawn to Durty’s, is surely home-from-home
The Joker is lots of fun, it helps to lift the load
So, it’s Thursday night at Durty’s, “that’s right” on Glenmore Road
Where? Paddington of course!
