John Logan's "Wake"

John Logan our aged friend as we are told, neither an Aussie or a Brit. lays in waiting to be put to rest in a dignified manner.
It is because of men like John, who took the foe to task, so that I can stand here in a peaceable atmosphere and deliver sentiments about him, without really knowing why he chose to live his life in the obscurity of family, that really should have shown him a great love, for the fact that he was a father, but also a soldier of two nations. Britain and Australia that now might fail in honouring his duty, paid for in full.
To say that he was a smoker and a drinker is a true fact, not to be denied. He did both with a passion and one could say contributed to his passing.
However, his mannerisms were that of a quite man never asking for more than he could afford. A calculated man who cherished the few friends that one can say became his family that was lost by circumstance. That he should fall foul within this circle of friends would surely have been a sad day for John.
I feel that he would have died as he wished, probably better had he been on his stool at Logan’s Corner, cigarette in hand and a beer on the bar. I can say that even in dying as he did, it was close enough for him. A beer and a fag at 4.30pm. A short walk home and gone peacefully at 5pm.
It is now left to people, friends like us, to talk about him in an endearing manner because he left behind memories that can be truly appreciated by those that befriended him.
Dare I say that the ghost of John Logan will always remain a part of what used to be the Rose and Crown, but the staff and family Nissen who only knew him as a patron of Durty Nelly’s will always be ever grateful for his loyalty and presence on a daily basis.
John Logan may I say, that at the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember him.
